Public Agenda for Battle of Georgian Bay 2001

Skirmish at Balm Beach Depot, 7:00pm
Balm Beach, ON.

American scouting parties have been reported along the shorelines of Nottawasaga Bay and British troops have been dispatched to confirm the reports. British troops worst fears become a reality as the advance guard of the American army land by bateaux at Balm Beach in an attempt to control this key supply depot. The few defending British troops and Native allies are no match as they are overwhelmed and surrender or flee. Looting and pillaging of the depot stores and local merchants ensues as the Americans plan and supply themselves for the larger confrontations to come.

Friday August 24th, 2001

Discovery Harbour Living History Encampment
& Tall Ships open to the public, 10:00am to 5:00pm

The historic site of Discovery Harbour will be open to the public featuring 5 Tall Ships from around the great lakes and over 1700 period encamped re-enactors. Historic buildings, period merchants & Jack’s Nasty Face period tavern along with musket and cannon demonstrations and public historic site tours will occur regularly.

Attack on the Port of Midland, 7:00pm
Midland, ON.
Presented by the Midland Downtown Business Association

The attack on the Port of Midland will be a demonstration of a fictional naval Tall Ship battle escalating into a full-scale marine assault landing of American forces on the shores of Midland Harbour. British troops and allies fight a retreating battle in defense of their community. After a valiant fight, overwhelming American numbers supported by Tall Ships with cannon, eventually break down the communities’ defenses with the Mayor of Midland being captured and surrendering the town to the enemy. Looting & pillaging of local merchants ensues with an American victory celebration being held outside the Midland Public Library immediately after the battle with captured soldiers and general public invited to attend.

Saturday August 25th, 2001

Discovery Harbour Living History Encampment

The historic site of Discovery Harbour will be open to the public featuring 5 Tall Ships from around the great lakes and over 1700 period encamped re-enactors. Parade & Pillaging of Penetanguishene, 11:15am.
Penetanguishene, ON.

Penetanguishene will experience an invasion of advancing American soldiers who actually pillage local businesses while British troops attempt to block their advance and attempt to defend the town at various intersections. A final all out full-scale 19th century battle including cavalry, artillery and support from Tall Ships will unfold on the shores of Waterfront Park with the British troops eventually being over-powered and the Mayor being captured and officially surrendering the town and the secret naval base. Surrendering ceremonies will take place at the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum.


Siege of Magazine Island, 7:00pm

Saturday’s evening battle will feature British marine assault landings on the American strongholds. British re-enforcements have arrived in force and Tall Ships engage the enemy in battle and provide cannon cover as smaller vessels and canoes assault the beachheads and American defenses. See artillery duels, British and allied troops storming the beaches, rockets lighting up the sky and cavalry saving the day!


Battle Aftermath Lantern Tour

Come see the aftermath of a 19th century battle. See the surgeon performing amputations on the wounded soldiers. Work your way through nervous British and American pickets and the no-mans land between them. See looters pillaging the dead and wounded. See widows looking for new husbands. Behind the battle lines barter for goods in the 19th century market place. See the traveling medicine show, visit Jack’s Nasty Face Tavern and above all, never let your guard down as surprise night attacks can occur with no warning.

Americans Last Stand, 2:30pm

The north garrison green will be the stage for the final assault on the Americans in a traditional 19th century land battle. Be on hand as British troops and their allies use the "cold steel" to ultimately prevail over the enemy and raise the Union Jack high into the sky in victory.
